How will I manage my BGS this time at Huracan?

Updated: Feb 24, 2020

Last year was my first exploration into bike packing and I was hooked immediately! In 2020, I have set out to do the Huracan 300, Vista 300 and Trans North Georgia (TNGA) , which brings me to the number 1 problem I have on multi-day racing/riding events, dangerously low blood sugars.

To be clear I wear a Dexcom G5 CGM and the Omni Pod insulin pump. Last year, I set my temp basal to 10%-15% decrease throughout the day and tried to consume 300 calories an hour. I only bolus two times each of the three days and every time I did it was only 25%-50% of what I would have normally bolus, but still every time it dropped my BGS straight down and I would fight for hours trying to get it back up.

This year I am going to start with two things. First, set up another bolus setting for just this kind of event with the help of my Dr. we plan to decrease by basil %40 for the 12 hours I am riding and then 20% decrease the next 12 hours. I plan on eating 300 to 500 calories an hour. As a diabetic who really strives to be as healthy as possible, I am learning that sometimes I need to eat cookies and cokes that I wouldn't normally eat. I will burn almost 10,000 calories a day at the Huracan so I hope this plan helps me strive for better blood sugars.
